A radical overhaul in the running of Irish primary schools is needed, with new governance structures and board members being given access to professional expertise, writes Seán Flynn.
In a new report, the Irish Primary Principals’ Network says primary school governance must be redesigned to reflect a changing society, new legislation affecting schools, a diverse school-going population and a system that is more community-based than parish-focused.
Seán Cottrell, network director, said the boards of management structure was “outdated”. Gerry Murphy, network president, said the report was timely as primary school boards will change over on December 1st.
