Champions League round-up
A late Javier Saviola goal earned Barcelona a 1-1 draw at Juventus in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tonight.
The draw preserves Barcelona's 14-game unbeaten run in this season's competition and makes them favourites to go through to a semi-final against arch-rivals Real Madrid or Manchester United.
Juventus had played by far the better football and took the lead in the 16th minute when defender Paolo Montero drilled in a loose ball from 10 yards.
At the other end, the home side's defence closed down Barcelona's attacks, limiting them to two long range shots on goal in the first half, both of which were gathered easily by keeper Gianluigi Buffon.
Juve could have doubled their lead shortly after the break when Roberto Bonano was forced to parry successive strikes by Edgar Davids and Alessandro Del Piero.
But in the 78th minute a clever ball by Dutchman Patrick Kluivert cracked open Juve's defence and 21-year-old Saviola slipped the ball past Buffon.
Juve substitute Marco Di Vaio could have won the match for the home side but missed when one-on-one with the keeper in injury time.
Meanwhile, a 14th minute header from Christian Vieri gave Inter Milan a 1-0 win over Valencia in the other quarter-final.
Both teams were forced to play for over half an hour with ten men after Valencia's David Albelda and Inter's Emre Belozoglu were sent off after an ugly clash.
Emre had been an influential figure - setting up a chance for Vieri in the 11th minute and then creating Inter's goal.
Running onto a pass from Francesco Coco the Turkish midfielder broke to the byline and Hernan Crespo flicked his cross into the path of Vieri, whose diving header flew past Valencia keeper Santiagio Canizares.
Valencia could have equalised in the 38th minute when David Albelda's low shot forced Inter keeper Francesco Toldo into a full stretch save.
The game turned nasty in the 57th minute when, in an off-the-ball incident, Valencia's Albelda kicked Emre and the Turk reacted angrily, confronting the Spaniard. After a scuffle involving at least 10 players, German referee Markus Merk dismissed the pair.
Valencia then went close twice with shots from Francisco Rafete and Pablo Aimar as they piled on intense late pressure searching, in vain, for an equaliser and a potentially vital away goal.
