A LAWYER of the executed human rights activist Ken Saro Wiwa said yesterday he was interrogated by Nigerian police after returning from a trip abroad to campaign for a boycott of Nigeria's vital crude oil exports.

"I was quizzed tore about two hours by the Nigerian security men at the airport after returning from a two week tour of Europe and Canada on Saturday night," Mr Olisa Agbakoba said in Lagos.

"They seized my passport and asked me to report to their office on Monday." He said six security men called at his house yesterday to remind him.

Mr Agbakoba was arrested last June. He said he went to Europe and Canada to speak to officials in foreign ministries about Nigeria's human rights situation.

"I addressed the Toronto Metropolitan Council and told them of the need by Canada to impose an embargo on Nigerian oil as a way of forcing the military ruler [Gen Sani] Abacha to restore democracy in Nigeria," he said.

"This is the only way to quickly restore democracy. It is the only way to bring the military junta of Abacha to its knees."

Mr Agbakoba said security officers also asked him about a meeting with the exiled Nigerian Nobel Prize winner in literature, Mr Wole Soyinka. Mr Agbakoba said he met Mr Soyinka in Canada. A cabinet minister, Mr Wada Nas, recently accused Mr Soyinka of being involved in two recent bombings.

The Nigerian Medical Association expressed fresh concern yesterday about the health of the detained opposition leader, Chief Moshood Abiola, saying that he was being denied the attention of doctors. Meanwhile a former Nigerian minister, and pro democracy press baron, Mr Alex Ibru, was flown to Britain yesterday for medical treatment after being shot by unknown assailants.
