Sarava, a 70-1 long shot, won yesterday's 134th Belmont Stakes in New York, denying War Emblem's quest to become the 12th Triple Crown winner in racing history.
After War Emblem added the Preakness Stakes to his Kentucky Derby victory, trainer Bob Baffert said the 1 1/2-mile Belmont would be a piece of cake. Sarava made him eat those words.
Belmont Park drew a record crowd of 103,222 spectators to see War Emblem's bid for history. Instead Sarava, trained by Ken McPeek and ridden by Edgar Prado, treated them to the sight of the longest-priced horse ever to win the race.
It was the biggest upset in Belmont history, although McPeek said he wasn't sure just how surprised he should be.
"I'm still pinching myself," he said. "Who wouldn't with a 70-1 winner? We just didn't know how good he is. Nobody did."
