Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario's 15th Wimbledon campaign ended in second-round defeat today when she was beaten 7-6 7-5 by American Lilia Osterloh.
Wimbledon's court two, known as the graveyard of champions, took its toll again when the 13th seed, a finalist here in 1995 and 1996 and a former French and U.S. Open winner, bowed out.
The 29-year-old Spaniard, who too often failed to take chances of breakpoints against the dogged Osterloh, took time out for treatment to her left wrist during the second set.
Sanchez Vicario broke Osterloh as she served for the match at 5-4. But despite hitting three aces in the following game, she was broken herself and looked almost helpless as the American served out to love for victory.
Fifth-seeded Serena Williams raced into the third round, hammering Germany's Barbara Rittner 6-4, 6-0 on Centre Court in just 55min.
Briton Greg Rusedski crushed Zimbabwe's Byron Black 6-1 6-3 6-4 to sweep into the third round.
Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain, the world number 83 who ended the hopes of top seed Martina Hingis in the opening round, saw her own tournament hopes collapse today as she lost in round two to Russian teen LinaKrasnoroutskaya.
Krasnoroutskaya, just 17 but one of the top young stars emerging in the women's game, won 6-3, 7-6 (7/3) and now takes on Austrian qualifierBarbara Schwartz.
