Johannesburg - A black South African soldier who killed seven white colleagues on Thursday flipped because the defence force withheld his salary after he was absent without leave, according to press reports.

The newspaper Beeld cited unnamed sources who said Lieut Sibusiso Madebula (28), who was shot dead by colleagues after the shooting spree at a base in Bloemfontein, had been absent to attend the funeral of his father. He had a history of poor discipline and was sent home from the South African peace-keeping operation in Lesotho.
