The National Safety Council this evening appealed to motorists to drive carefully over the busy Easter bank holiday weekend.

A spokesperson for the NSC has urged motorists to be cautious and said traffic around the State over the next few days is expected to be heavy.

Bord Fáilte said the lifting of various foot-and-mouth restrictions has allowed some Dúchassites and other attractions to reopen for the Easter break.

A large number of air passengers are expected to travel through Dublin, Cork and Shannon Airports between today and bank-holiday Monday, say air-traffic controllers at Aer Rianta. Aer Lingus said it will carry more than 110,000 passengers over the next four days.

Ryanair says it will fly a record 185,000 passengers this weekend, an increase of 16 per cent per cent on last year. Iarnród Éireann is to carry up to 300,000 passengers on Intercity trains over the Easter Holiday and will run over 30 extra trains to cope with the increased numbers of weekend travellers.

On Good Friday, a Saturday service will operate on Dart and outer suburban lines with key commuter trains for Longford, Arklow, Portlaoise, Athlone and Carlow also operating.

Met Éireann made no promises on the weather front, saying the forecast for the weekend was "a mixed picture." It will be cool and breezy tomorrow, with sunshine, cloud and varying amounts of rain. Overall it will be a mild weekend cooling down on Sunday and Monday, with sunny spells and showers.
