Ryanair is cancelling 72 flights to and from Trapani Airport in Sicily from May 6th to the 11th due to the ongoing Italian air force restrictions on civil aviation at the airport.
The company says it is "no longer willing to inconvenience its passengers by diverting these flights to and from Palermo airport" and is therefore cancelling flights until Trapani is fully reopened to Ryanair flights.
It apologised to passengers this evening for the cancellations and said it had contacted affected passengers via email and SMS to provide them with a refund or a switch to an alternate flight.
A list of cancelled flights is available on the company's web site.
Ryanair's Stephen McNamara said the company had contacted management at the airport to express its concern over the on-going restrictions at the airport. He said the airline hopes to return to full service at Trapani as soon as possible.
The airport, on the western tip of Sicily, doubles as a military base. It is located about 350 miles from the westernmost point of Libya.
