A Russian youth who came to Ireland without a passport or documentation has been released from custody after a court heard that he has applied for asylum in Ireland.
The 16-year-old had been arrested last week for an alleged theft offence at the Jervis Shopping Centre in Dublin, the Children's Court was told.
When questioned as to his name and address the youth gave false details and then claimed he was of no fixed abode.
He told the arresting garda he had been in the country for the last two weeks and had been residing in a flat in Dublin with a friend, the court was told last week.
At the bail hearing, Judge Thomas Fitzpatrick heard that the youth had applied for asylum and the authorities were satisfied with the details he had furnished.
The judge released him on bail until September 7th when he is to indicate how he will plead to the theft charge.
