Russian Rhythm confounded recent poor vibes to land a famous victory in the Sagitta 1000 Guineas at Newmarket today.
As a result of reports that she might not be ready in time, Sir Michael Stoute's filly went off at a generous 12/1.
Responding to Kieren Fallon's urgings, she quickened clear of the French challengers Six Perfections, the 7/4 favourite, and 5/1 chance Intercontinental.
Fallon, winning his third 1000 Guineas, told Channel 4 attheraces: "It was great. She's a very good filly and she quickened up nice for me."
But the victory was not without drama as the champion jockey explained: "I had a problem leaving the stalls. She went down on her head and I was lucky to stay on her."
Wimple, Khulood and the winner's stable companion, Hector's Girl, disputed the early lead at a good pace, with Russian Rhythm held up on the rails in mid-division, while Six Perfections was trapped at the back of the field.
Yesterday made rapid headway to lead two furlongs out with Intercontinental on her tail, but Fallon followed them through and leading just inside the furlong, his filly ran on strongly to hold the fast-finishing second by one and a half lengths, with the third one and a quarter lengths away.
Stoute, who also saddled Musical Bliss to win the Classic first time out in 1989, had feared today's race was coming a week too soon for Russian Rhythm.
He said: "She wasn't really blooming and wasn't eating as well as she can, because she is a very good doer. She's got a little bit better lately with the advent of some good weather.
"I felt in her last bit of work she showed a little bit more sparkle than before, so we just had to be patient.
"Kieren was a little bit happier with her preparation than I was, but fortunately she has just come right on the day.
"It was a team effort and a lot of care and attention has gone into this filly.
