FIVE men are still being questioned by the RUC in Castlereagh Interrogation Centre in Belfast about the disappearance of people believed to have been abducted and killed by the IRA. They were arrested in their homes in west Belfast on Wednesday.
There were reports that a man in his 70s suffering from cancer and too ill to be moved, was questioned in his home. The RUC declined to comment on the allegation.
The arrests were part of its investigations into claims that paramilitaries might have killed and secretly buried several people who went missing during the Troubles, an RUC spokesman said. Around 12 people disappeared in Belfast, most in the 1970s.
The Mitchell report calls for "the provision of information on the status of missing persons" to help the peace process.
The co ordinator of Families of the Disappeared, Mr Seamus McKendry, said he feared for his life if anyone was charged over the abductions and killings. His organisation was interested in recovering the bodies of the victims, not in securing convictions, he said.
He was concerned that some republicans were blaming his campaign for prompting the renewed RUC investigation into the disappeared.
