THE new Chief Constable of the RUC, Mr Ronnie Flanagan, has said the police have nothing to indicate that another IRA cessation is imminent.

He said, in an interview with a local newspaper: "Our fear is that in the coming months there are liable to be more terrorist attacks in the province."

However, he agreed that ultimately there must be a ceasefire, because further violence served no purpose.

Yesterday, the leader of the Alliance Party, Lord Alderdice, with the party's security spokesman, Cllr Steve McBride, visited the Maze Prison and had a meeting with UDA prisoners which he described as "useful".

The Alliance leader had also agreed to meet INLA prisoners, but they refused to meet him because be had declined to be accompanied by officers of the IRSP. Lord Alderdice said the prisoners had set preconditions, and when he did not go along with these they refused to meet him.
