Republican Sinn Fein has accused the RUC Special Branch of attempting to pressurise people in Derry into becoming informers. A party spokesman, Mr Michael Donnelly, said the alleged incidents had been logged with solicitors. He claimed that individuals' livelihoods had been threatened by police and those who had refused to co-operate were suffering harassment. Responding to the allegations, an RUC spokesman said intelligence was the most significant factor in saving life and preventing crime and the police would seek by all lawful means to "enhance its intelligence-gathering capability". Any complaints about the behaviour of individual officers would be fully investigated, he added.
