NETWORK 2 is to transfer many of its functions to Cork as part of a new regional policy. It has been decided in principle to broadcast presentation on Network 2, RTE's second TV channel, from the new Cork studios.
The decision will not take effect before next year. It would mean that all continuity and other announcements would come from Cork.
However, it is believed that the technology to be installed in the new studios, which will include new links to Dublin, would allow a much greater increase in the amount of television originating there.
RTE Cork moved from Union Quay to Father Mathew Street last year. The director general, Mr Joe Barry, opened the new studios in December.
Already several programmes are made in Cork and broadcast from there. They include Nationwide, No Disco and some children's programmes.
The head of broadcasting in Cork, Mr Gerry Reynolds, said the decision was part of RTE's increasing emphasis on the regions. It is believed the station is investing about £1 million in technology in Munster. As part of the upgrading of Cork, Mr Ray McCarthy has been hired as a full time producer.
RTE has held public meetings in Cork and Sligo as part of its new regional policy. Another meeting will be held this month in Tullamore. RTE has also invited the public to make submissions on programming suggestions.
The regional emphasis follows the Green Paper on Broadcasting, which suggested moving Network 2 out of Dublin and seeking to put the State broadcaster more in touch with the rest of the country.
