Roy Keane has been withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland squad for next week's friendly against Denmark.
The Manchester United skipper is to take extra time off to recover from the knock which kept him out of Manchester United's 3-0 Champions League win over Boavista on Tuesday.
Mark Kennedy has also been withdrawn from the squad having sustained a groin injury.
Wolves winger Kennedy has been ruled out of Saturday's English Divison One game against Norwich after picking up the injury against Grimsby at the weekend.
Mick McCarthy had originally named a 25-man squad but has no intention of calling up any replacements at the moment.
"After our 2-0 victory over Russia in Dublin last month, this match against the Danes gives me a very good opportunity to look at the panel before naming those 23 players who will be making the journey to Japan and South Korea this summer," said McCarthy.
"Naturally I'm disappointed that both Keane and Kennedy are not available on this occasion because of injuries. Better for them to have those problems now than next May when we depart for Tokyo.
"I didn't see any point in calling up any further players to the squad as I still have 23 and I know they will all be out to prove something to me."
Keane's withdrawl means that Mark Kinsella, who missed last month's win over Russia, will almost certainly start and may even captain the side.
Colin Healy can also expect to win his second cap.
