Shamrock Rovers produced the comeback of all comebacks at the RSC tonight after clawing their way back from three goals down to walk away with a share of the spoils in a thrilling 3-3 draw.
Indeed, the Dublin side could have snatched victory in the final minute only for striker Trevor Molloy to see his penalty kick well saved by Pat Holden.
Waterford - who finished with 10 men after Wayne Fitzgerald was dismissed for two yellows - opened the scoring on seven minutes when Alan Reilly blasted home in spectacular fashion from a Kevin Waters cross.
The home side doubled that lead just six minutes later Neal Fenn stabbed home from close range following a goal mouth scramble.
Waterford could have put the result beyond doubt late in the half but were denied by a string of fine saves from Rovers 'keeper Tony O'Dowd.
Despite their spirited showing after the break, Rovers were left deflated when Waterford bagged a third on 61 minutes - Reilly successfully converting from the spot after James Keddy handled in the area.
But Rovers hit back in immediate fashion with Molloy tucking away a penalty after Tony Grant was tugged back in the area. Terry Palmer snatched a second with 11 minutes to play.
Sensing that their opponents were struggling, Rovers pressed forward in the dying minutes and pulled level when substitute Glen Fitzpatrick headed powerfully to the back of the net.
Rovers manager Liam Buckley will be delighted with the spirit his side showed tonight, despite not coming away with an unlikely win had Molloy not fluffed his lines from the spot in the last minute
At O2 Park, manager Paul Doolin could find no way past his former club UCD as Drogheda United were held to a scoreless draw.
