The SDLP candidate for the West Tyrone Westminster seat, Mrs Brid Rodgers, has alleged she and her canvassing team were intimidated by republicans in the constituency.
Mrs Rodgers, who has been threatened by loyalists because of her work on the nationalist Garvaghy Road in Portadown, Co Armagh, said it was the first time she had experienced "overt aggression" from republicans.
This week in Strabane, Co Tyrone, all of Mrs Rodgers's posters were taken down after hanging for less than 24 hours. A further eight posters were removed in Dromore, Co Tyrone, and thrown in the garden of a local SDLP councillor.
The North's Minister of Agriculture claimed suspect vehicles followed her teams on the campaign trail and one party worker was "badly shaken" as a result of verbal abuse.
She also said that while attending a Gaelic match in Clones, Co Monaghan, on May 20th, she was called "scum" and told not to contest the seat because it belonged to Mr Pat Doherty of Sinn Fein. "I was lucky my two sons were with me so when they began moving in my sons stepped in. But some of the language they used I wouldn't repeat," she added.
Mr Doherty, who yesterday toured the constituency with the US Republican Congressman, Mr Peter King, said Sinn Fein workers had played no role in the incidents. "There is no truth in these allegations. They are typical smear tactics. No Sinn Fein activists were involved. If anyone is suffering intimidation it is Sinn Fein members in Co Antrim," he said.
A car belonging to a Sinn Fein election worker was destroyed in an arson attack in Ballycastle, Co Antrim at 5 a.m. yesterday. It is understood the man was threatened by the LVF. RUC officers are examining a letter sent to him.
