Day one are the latest exponents of the Bristol Beat to make a bit of a splash, although they may well be standing on the shoulders of giants, given that they are following in the beat steps of Massive Attack, Tricky and Portishead.
Signed to Massive Attack's own Melankolic label, the band are a two-piece, featuring the disparate talents of Donnie Hardwidge and Phelim Byrne. The former comes from a jazz background while the latter is from a traditional Irish music background.
The duo's debut album, Ordinary Man, is they say "a mix of laid-back hip-hop with acidic irony-laden narratives wrapped in melancholic string and acoustic guitars". Sound good.
Day One make their Irish debut at Whelans, Wexford Street on Friday.
