The Department of the Environment will spend €2 million over the next two years providing 21 skateboard parks around the country.
Announcing for the first time the details of the location of the facilities, Minister for the Environment Dick Roche said the €1 million initially earmarked for a pilot skateboard scheme for this year had been doubled to €2 million.
This was, he said, because of the "number and quality" of submissions which his department had received from city and county councils around the country.
Among the counties to receive funding for the new facilities are Dublin, Cork, Clare, Galway, Offaly, Waterford, Wicklow, Westmeath, Kerry and Limerick.
The department funding for each facility ranges from €35,000 for a proposed mobile facility in Laois, to €150,000 each for facilities in counties Westmeath, Wicklow and Kerry.
However, the final cost of the 21 projects is thought likely to be significantly higher than the €2 million allocated by the department, as city and county councils will also be contributing funding for the scheme.
"Up to now, financial assistance has concentrated on the provision of playgrounds for younger children, with few specialist facilities being provided for the older age group," said Mr Roche.
"I am delighted therefore, to be in a position to provide substantial financial assistance which will help provide teenagers with properly designed skateboard facilities to develop their skills."
Councils should draw down the funding allocated from his department for the approved projects as a matter of urgency, Mr Roche concluded.
