Bryan Robson is well equipped for the Republic of Ireland manager's job according to former boss Mick McCarthy.
McCarthy resigned last month after the Republic began their Euro 2004 qualifying campaign with defeats away to Russia and at home to Switzerland.
He also came under pressure because of the unresolved dispute between him and Roy Keane.
But McCarthy believes Robson has the track record to succeed at international level.
He told Sky Sports News:"Robbo did a great job up at Middlesbrough. I know they had a turbulent time but I think he was a success.
"He always had his team motivated to have a go at it. He's a legend as a player and I think in terms of management he's got a good record so you never know."
He added: "Robbo's had European experience. Any manager or coach that's been with a club and managed in European competition, whether it's in England, Ireland, Scotland or Wales, that would help, although I didn't and I'm not so sure Big Jack [Charlton] did either and we did all right between us."
McCarthy feels his former squad can turn around their poor start to the qualifying competition and win a place in Portugal in Euro 2004.
"Somebody's got a difficult task. I still think it can be done if the players are motivated and altogether. If they can win their next two games they can qualify, probably via the play-offs.
"Who that man will be, I don't know, but I wish that man the best of luck."
