A motorist involved in a road rage incident avoided a jail sentence yesterday when he handed over £1,500 in compensation for a woman driver he verbally abused.

However, Mr Mervyn Smyth said he is considering suing the State for his own compensation after he was held overnight in jail before the High Court ordered his release.

Mr Smyth, a painter-decorator from Finglas in Dublin was convicted of dangerous driving for banging on the door of a car which had cut across him on the Navan Road in December 1998.

He also shouted at air hostess Anne White "you stupid f. . . woman" and "you f. . . cow" and twice swerved in front of her car to make her stop, Dublin District Court heard on Wednesday.
