Two rival GAA managers have joined together in a bid to cut down the death toll on Irish roads.

Mayo boss James Horan and Dublin manager Pat Gilroy – whose teams meet in a national league match in Castlebar tomorrow evening – have teamed up to campaign to make roads safer.

The Travel Safely campaign, organised by Mayo County Council road safety officer Noel Gibbons, is being supported by the two managers.

Mr Gibbons said the campaign asks motorists to make a personal commitment to drive at appropriate and legal speeds in an effort to tackle concerns about speeding on the roads.

He said a special appeal would be made at the match on Saturday for all the fans to drive with care.

“On the football pitch speed is a necessity, but excessive and inappropriate speed on the road is not fair play,” said Gilroy.

“Apart from the obvious risk of causing injury and death, it also creates distress among other road-users, leading to people feeling unsafe as they walk or cycle on our roads.”

A huge crowd is expected at McHale Park for the game tomorrow, as admission is free. This is because the original game between Mayo and Dublin had to be abandoned last month due to fog.
