The Dublin business community today hit out at the rioting in the capital's centre yesterday with saying it cost retailers €10 million in lost trade.

Business group Ibec said it was difficult to quantify the value of business lost due to shops having to close though Torlach Denihan director of Ibec affiliate, Retail Ireland, suggested a figure of €10 million

He also expressed concern about the possible implications of damage done to the city centre's reputation as a shopping destination.

"Besides the immediate cost to businesses and individuals directly affected, street violence of this sort damages the reputation of the city right across the island and overseas," Mr Denihan said.

Aebhric Mc Gibney, policy director at Dublin Chamber of Commerce noted, however, that it was "business as usual" today.

He said: "We believe that the quarter of a million shoppers and tourists that come to the city centre on a daily basis will see the riots yesterday for what they are: a once off."

The disruption was unprecedented and could not have been foreseen, he added.
