Police in Washington have upped the reward to $500,000 for information leading to the arrest of the serial sniper who has killed eight people and wounded two others in the greater Washington area in 10 days.
Authorities in Montgomery County, Maryland, just north of the capital, where the first five shootings took place within 16 hours beginning October 2nd, also released a composite drawing of a white, box-like truck with a roll-up rear gate, damaged rear bumper and unintelligible lettering on the side, seen near some of the shootings in the county.
Montgomery County Police Chief Charles Moose, citing witness accounts, said the white paint on the truck was oxidized, not shiny, indicating the vehicle was probably an older model.
Yesterday, police linked the latest killing, that of a 53-year-old Philadelphia man Friday morning at a self-service gas station in Massaponax, Virginia, to the nine other shootings.
Ballistics tests by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, they said, showed conclusively that each of the 10 victims were felled by a single shot from the same weapon -- a 5.56-millimeter (.223-caliber) assault-type rifle.
