Three men are believed to have walked into the offices of the Revenue Commissioners at Ashtown Gate on the Navan Road at about 7.15pm. They stole 10 laptops which were chained and padlocked to desks.

“As a matter of policy, Revenue’s laptops are encrypted using a leading brand that complies with the highest international security certifications," Revenue said in a statement.

Revenue said it contacted the Office of the Data Protection Commissioners this morning to report the incident.

The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner confirmed today it has launched an investigation into the thefts. A spokesman said it would be looking at what type of information was stored on the computers, the security and encryption measures in place and whether they had been applied.

It will also examine the security of the Navan Road offices and how the gang was able to break in.
