PARENTS and children from a six flat complex off James's Street in Dublin have set up a 24 hour watch to deter drug dealers from their area.

Residents from the Mary Aikenhead flats and the Basin Street flats claim drug dealers freely come and go in the flats. They say their watch will make young people aware of drugs and keep dealers and pushers out.

"We know the local junkies and at least two dealers, so do the police. At least if we are here the pushers will know there's a movement against drugs in the area and it might make them think twice before targeting the flats," one woman claimed.

"We've set up the watch for the sake of the kids. Its all teenagers and young children in the flats. We've seen all too often what drugs do to kids. One summer they haven't a care in the world. The next they start taking drugs and their lives are ruined," said Ms Anne Ward, a resident of the Basin Street flats.
