The number of planning permissions granted in the last quarter of last was down by 23.6 per cent from 22,247 units to 16,986 units, according to figures released by the Central Statistics Office this morning.
The figures also show that figures planning permission was granted for 13,618 new houses compared with 18,106 new houses in the same quarter of 2000, a decrease of 24.8 per cent.
Planning permission was granted for 3,368 apartments in the fourth quarter 2001 and 4,141 in the fourth quarter of 2000, a decrease of 18.7 per cent.

- the average floor area for houses was highest in the Mid-East region at 178.0 square metres and lowest in the Dublin region at 107.1 square metres.
- the average floor area per unit for apartments was greatest in the South-East region at 89.1 square metres, while the lowest was the Border region at 68.2 square metres.
- that the total floor area planned was 3,672 thousand sq. metres in the fourth quarter 2001. Of this, 61.6 per cent was for new dwellings, 27.8 rep cent for other new constructions and 10.6 per cent for extensions.
The total floor area planned decreased by 14.6 per cent in comparison with the same quarter of 2000.
