Management at Woco, the troubled car components plant in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim, said yesterday its German parent would retain the plant if employees could show that "the conditions to make the plant viable commercially will be introduced without delay". About 30 of the company's 117 employees are to be temporarily laid off this week.
The company said this was "a direct result" of a recent decision by workers to reject, by 29 votes to 27, proposals to introduce multi-machine operations before a Labour Court hearing on October 30th.
The plant has until December to make its operation more competitive. The company will hold further talks with SIPTU before next month's Labour Court hearing.
