THE debate over a European single currency again shook the Tory party as former leadership challenger last night John Redwood turned on the Chancellor of the Exchequer, accusing him of damaging cabinet unity.
Mr Redwood was reacting to comments from Mr Kenneth Clarke in which he described as "pathetic" the prospect of Britain signing up late to economic and monetary union. Mr Clarke also hit out at "rent a quote" critics.
An angry Mr Redwood focussed on Mr Clarke's comment that joining late would be "pathetic". He said: "I think it is a great pity that the Chancellor has damaged the unity of the government. The government has not decided to rule out any option indeed the government's one policy on this is they want to keep open all options."
