Former assistant Dublin city and county manager, Mr George Redmond, charged with corruption while in office, was further remanded on bail yesterday. Mr Redmond (76) was before Dublin District Court awaiting preliminary examination of his case before he can be sent for trial to the Circuit Court.

He is accused of four offences under the Prevention of Corruption Acts, 1906 and 1916, and under the Public Bodies Corrupt Practices Act, 1889, which allegedly occurred while he was the head of Dublin County Council in the 1980s.

Two charges relating to the sale of a strip of land in Palmerstown by the council allege that between December 1987 and March 1988 Mr Redmond corruptly received a gift of money from a garage-owner, Mr Brendan Fassnidge, as an inducement or reward in relation to the sale.

The other two charges relate to the compulsory purchase by the council of 167 acres at Buzzardstown and Coolmine between June 1985 and June 1986.

The book of evidence has already been served in the case, and yesterday the State Solicitor, Mr Patrick Geraghty, sought one further remand to complete preliminary examination.

Mr Geraghty told Judge David Anderson that this would be the last remand. Mr Anthony Harris, solicitor for Mr Redmond, said he consented to the State's application.

Judge Anderson remanded Mr Redmond on his own bail of £900 to October 23rd.
