Dublin's former assistant city and county manager, Mr George Redmond, appeared in court yesterday on charges of not making tax returns.
Mr Redmond (75), of Deerpark Lawns, Castleknock, faces 10 charges that he knowingly failed to make returns on the prescribed forms between 1988 and 1998.
Dublin District Court heard he was arrested by appointment with Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) gardai outside the Bridewell Garda station yesterday afternoon. Det Insp Patrick Byrne, of CAB, brought Mr Redmond into the station and after he was charged he had nothing to say.
A solicitor for the State, Mr Patrick Geraghty, said the DPP had directed that the charges be tried on indictment. There was no objection to bail but the prosecution was seeking a condition that he surrender his passport and not apply for any new one in this jurisdiction or elsewhere.
Mr Redmond's solicitor, Mr Anthony Harris, said his client's son, Mr David Redmond, was acceptable to the prosecution as an independent bailsperson. Judge Mary Collins remanded him to September 9th on his own bail of £500 with an independent surety of £500. Mr Redmond spoke during the brief hearing only to acknowledge that he had signed his bail bond.
