Following a meeting today between the Minister for Transport Mr Brennan and Dublin City Council the controversial road signs for the new Dublin traffic arrangements will have to be altered.
The Department sought the meeting after expressing reservations about the plan, especially the new road signs which they believe may contravene national regulations.
The minister said after the meeting he had asked Dublin City Council to redesign the signs as they are confusing and impossible to read.
The 10 per cent of signs already in place are to remain put in the hope that drivers will get used to them but 500 others that have been manufactured may be scrapped.
The news comes as an embarrassment to Dublin City Council which had established a committee, including AA and other motorist interest groups, to aid the design process.
However, the council proclaimed the new system a success yesterday as Dublin Bus reported shorter journey times and traffic onto O'Connell Street was reduced by 50 per cent.
The Labour Party said the plans had been flagged for years and criticised Mr Brennan. Labour said the Minister's claim that his Department had not been consulted was "beyond belief".
But the plan was criticised by Fine Gael who said it was "sprung on motorists". It described the road signs as "more of a hindrance than a help".
