1. Mr Patrick Daly's body was found in a well at Kilcummin, Co Kerry, on January 23rd, 1996.
2. Mr Tom Casey was found dead with his arms and legs tied at his home in Oranmore, Co Galway, on January 23rd, 1996.
3. Ms Joyce Quinn, Kildare, found dead from a stab wound on January 24th, 1996.
4. Mr Danny Fanning shot dead at Stephenstown, Rosegreen, Co Tipperary, on February 6th, 1996.
5. Mr John Fennell beaten to death in a caravan park in Bundoran, Co Donegal, on March 5th, 1996.
6. Ms Sandra Tobin, a mother of one child, found dead - semi naked, with a hold all bag covering her head - at her home in Waterford on March 15th, 1996.
7. Mr Tom Nevin shot dead at his pub, Jack White's, near Brittas Bay, Co Wicklow, on March 19th, 1996.
8. Mrs Noeleen Cawley died after being stabbed several times in the chest at her home in Sligo on April 2nd, 1996.
9. 13 year old Alison White's body found after she went missing in Bundoran, Co Donegal, on April 14th, 1996.
10. Mrs Anne Marie Duffin, a mother of two, found dead in her home near Bleanerville, Co Kerry, on April 15th, 1996. She had been badly mutilated around the head and neck.
11. Ms Patti Bainbridge was shot dead in her home in the village of Coolrain, near Mountrath, Co Laois, on May 6th, 1996.
12. Ms Angela Collins (49) was strangled in Ballingarry, Co Limerick, on May 7th, 1996.
13. Mr Patrick Maguire (19) died after being beaten on a street in Monaghan town on May 14th, 1996.
14. Det Garda Jerry McCabe shot dead in his car during the attempted robbery of a post office delivery lorry in Adare, Co Limerick, on June 7th, 1996.
15. Mr John Keane (27) shot down in the garden of his home in Southill, Limerick on July 5th, 1996.
16. On July 9th the body of Mr David Nugent was found in waste ground in Clonmel, Co Tipperary. His hands and feet were tied with the laces of his runners and he had been stabbed and beaten with a blunt instrument.
17. Mr Denis Mackey died following a scuffle in Thurles, Co Tipperary, on July 13th, 1996.
18. Mr Sean Colbert (53) shot outside his home in Limerick on August 9th, 1996.
According to Irish Times crime files, there have been 12 violent deaths in Dublin since the start of 1996. They included four so called "contract killings", among them the murder of journalist Veronica Guerin in June. In 1995, 19 of the 41 murders recorded by gardai were committed in the Dublin Metropolitan Area.
