RDS grounds to see €100m development

A new €100 million development at the Royal Dublin Society grounds in Ballsbridge was given the go-ahead today.

A new €100 million development at the Royal Dublin Society grounds in Ballsbridge was given the go-ahead today.

An Bord Pleanala said they had granted planning permission for a number of multi-storey office blocks, demolition work and the upgrading of stands.

But a spokeswoman for the authority said a number of conditions have been placed on the proposed work at the Ballsbridge site.

The RDS had claimed that its future could be in jeopardy if plans for the multi-million euro project were rejected.

The development plans were opposed by residents' groups including the nearby Poor Clare order of nuns, the Sandymount and Merrion Residents' Association and the Anglesea Road Residents' Association.

A ruling by An Bord Pleanala found the proposed development would not seriously injure the amenities of the area, or of property in the vicinity.

It also said the project would facilitate the consolidation of the long term use of the south Dublin site. The society had applied for five office blocks covering more than 25,000 square metres to be built at Simmonscourt Road.

But An Bord Pleanala ruled one of the buildings must be omitted from the project.

Other conditions include the relocation of the Hibernia statue and arena clock on site, landscaping, and lighting, the planning authority said.

Planners added the work would not materially or adversely affect the character or setting of protected structures, such as the RDS building itself.

The development is also expected to be acceptable on terms of traffic safety and convenience.
