A CALL for the Minister for Enterprise and Employment, Mr Bruton, to overturn a decision to allow a waste recycling plant in Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon, was overwhelmingly endorsed at a public rally in the town yesterday.
The site of the plant, where paper is to be separated from other waste, will be visited by the PD leader, Ms Mary Harney, this evening.
It was granted planning permission by Roscommon County Council and this was upheld on appeal recently by An Bord Pleanala.
A motion, proposed to the rally by Mr Joe Duffy, called on Mr Bruton to rescind an IDA decision to sell a site for the waste plant at the town's industrial estate. It also called on all State agencies to ensure everything possible was done to find an alternative site for the development.
The motion was also supported by local politicians Mr John Connor (FG), Mr Sean Doherty (FF), Senator Denis Naughten (FG), Senator Michael Finneran (FF), former Fianna Fail TD Mr Terry Leyden, Ms May Sexton (PD) and, Mr Benedict Ryan (GP), as well as by local county councillors.
Mr Duffy told the meeting: "The project in its proposed location jeopardises too many current benefits, and compromises the future potential of our industrial estate and the future of our town."
