Sydney - Rain along Australia's eastern seaboard yesterday brought relief to thousands of weary firefighters battling bushfires that have killed two men, but unless the rain continues relief could be short-lived.
"There were people out on the street jumping up and down," said fireman Dick Brown, at Coonabarabran, in the far north-west of New South Wales state, site of the largest fire that has burnt 625,000 acres of scrubland.
