Rail worker dies in station accident

A 37-year-old rail worker died yesterday in an accident at Clarke Railway Station in Dundalk, Co Louth

A 37-year-old rail worker died yesterday in an accident at Clarke Railway Station in Dundalk, Co Louth. Mr Ronnie McCrave, a father of two, from Cluan Enda, Dundalk, died after he was caught between the carriage of a train and a locomotive. He was shunting or joining the two units together when he apparently slipped between them.

The accident happened at 10.20 a.m. as he was preparing the 10.34 a.m. service from Dundalk to Dublin for departure. He was taken to Louth County Hospital in Dundalk where he died shortly before noon.

Mr McCrave joined Iarnr≤d ╔ireann in 1990. An internal investigation to establish the cause and circumstances of the accident has begun. An inspector from the Health and Safety Authority also visited the station yesterday to carry out a separate investigation.
