Security van raiders made off with more than £100,000 after the driver's family was held hostage in Belfast.

The driver's wife, son and daughter were held overnight at an empty house before he was ordered to take the van to Mount Ober golf club in the east of the city.

The ordeal began when robbers burst into the family home at Saul near Downpatrick, Co Down.

As his family were taken to Belfast, the man was instructed to go to work and pick up the money.

His vehicle was intercepted at the golf club and the cash transferred to a white van.

After the robbery, he was able to go back to his depot and report what had happened.

A police spokeswoman said the family were uninjured but extremely traumatised by their ordeal.

The van and the car used by the robbers have not yet been recovered.
