Spain's nuclear watchdog has appealed to the public to return a yellow case stolen from a car because it contained radioactive material.

"It could represent a risk if the equipment is opened or destroyed as it would leave the source (of radiation) without protection," said the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN).

CSN said the material would not represent a risk if the case remained shut. It was part of equipment used to measure density and humidity levels belonging to ICAES, a company based near Madrid which carries out quality tests on construction sites.

The CSN did not give details about how the case, marked with the symbol for radioactivity, was taken from the car.
