An action for damages taken by a former radio station manager alleging he was bullied and harassed by the chief executive of Mid West Radio, Mr Paul Claffey, was settled at the High Court yesterday. Eight other actions involving the station, Mr Claffey and former employees were also settled.
The settlement was announced on the 10th day of the hearing of an action by Mr Henry McGlade, of Breaffy, Castlebar, against County Mayo Radio Ltd of Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo which carries on business as Mid West Radio. The defendants had denied the claims and the case was expected to continue for another six weeks.
When the hearing was due to resume yesterday, Mr Fergus O'Hagan SC, for the plaintiff, said the matter had been settled and could be struck out.
It was also agreed that eight other actions, including two for defamation, three High Court actions and three Employment Appeals Tribunal cases would not now proceed.
Mr Justice Johnson described the outcome as "very prudent". The case had caused a lot of strain and anxiety, he said, and he congratulated counsel on reaching a settlement in what was a complex and unusual case.
