The Great Limerick Run last May generated €2.45 million for the midwest economy, according to a new report.

The study commissioned by Limerick City Council also found that more than 94 per cent of participants from outside the city said that the event improved their perception of Limerick.

About 8,500 people took part in the run on May 6th last. The event featured a marathon, half marathon and a 10km race.

According to the economic and social impact report completed by Focus Consulting, 49.6 per cent of participants claimed the Great Limerick Run was the main reason why they started exercising.

A total of 2,284 bed nights were created with 100 per cent hotel occupancy on the night before the event, with the average length of stay by those outside the region amounting to two nights.

Speaking at the launch of the report yesterday, race director John Cleary said the figures were “hugely encouraging” for an event that was only three years in existence. “Our plans are already in place for the 2013 run and in terms of participant numbers, it’s estimated that the Great Limerick Run will realise an economic impact of €4.5 million by 2015 growing to €5.36 million in 2017 so the potential is considerable. It also highlights the demand for events of this stature and quality in the midwest region,” he added.

The economic findings were based on a survey of race participants, locally, nationally and internationally, and also data from local hoteliers.
