THE Brixton prison escaper, Nessan Quinlivan, appeared in the Special Criminal Court in Dublin yesterday.
Quinlivan (31), of Knockalisheen Avenue, Ballynanty Beg, Limerick was charged with falsely imprisoning Mr Michael Lyons at Greenhill Road, Garryowen, Limerick city on August 25th, 1996.
Del Sgt James Browne gave evidence of arresting Quinlivan under common law outside Henry Street Garda station at 10.29 p.m. on Tuesday.
Cross examined by Quinlivan's solicitor, Mr Michael Farrell, Del Sgt Browne said Quinlivan had been released "some minutes" earlier from custody, where he was being held on suspicion of being a member of the IRA. He was first arrested on Monday morning.
Quinlivan and another man, Mr John Ryan (30), of Downey Avenue, Killalee, Limerick were remanded in custody until November 13th. Det Sgt Dan Haugh gave evidence of arresting Mr Ryan under common law at 10.11 pm. on Tuesday. The sergeant said Mr Ryan had also been in custody in Henry Street following his arrest on Monday morning.
Mr Ryan was charged with falsely imprisoning Mr Lyons at New Road, Killeely, Limerick on August 25th.
Mr Farrell objected to media reports about Quinlivan. He said there had been reports in relation to his client and a bail application on another matter.
Mr Justice Barr, presiding, said the court had no right to interfere with reporting of proceedings of the Oireachtas.
He assured Mr Farrell the court would not be influenced "in any way" by what had been said in relation to Quinlivan on another occasion.
The court remanded Quinlivan and Mr Ryan in custody, with liberty apply for bail.
