A book outlining the Famine relief work done by the Central Relief Committee of the Society of Friends was launched in Dublin yesterday.
It was first published in 1852 under the title Transactions of the Central Relief Committee of the Society of Friends during the Famine in Ireland in 1846 and 1847.
The committee imported food and clothing from Quakers in the United States, set up soup kitchens and collected £200,000, the equivalent of £11 million today. It also engaged in long term projects, such as grant aiding the distribution of seeds and arranging for new agricultural skills to be taught.
