A COURT has directed that the north Kerry man charged with the double murder of father and son Michael and Denis Hanrahan at their home near Moyvane, Co Kerry, is to be given any psychiatric help that is warranted while he is in custody.

Thomas Barrett (30), Cleandries, Causeway, was brought before a special sitting of Listowel District Court on Monday night last, charged with the murder of Michael (60) and Denis (27) on March 26th at their home at Gordromsallihy. He was remanded in custody to Cork Prison. That sitting was told he answered "no" to both murder charges.

He was back before the court yesterday when the State applied for a further remand in custody for preparation of the book of evidence.

Mr Barrett's solicitor, Michael Dowling, said he wished to make an application for "appropriate medical and psychiatric treatment as required" to be made available to him. His client's family was concerned about his medical condition. He handed into court a letter from a consultant psychiatrist recommending such treatment.

Mr Dowling made a second application for legal aid. His client who was single had been working, had a little savings and no property. He now had no income. He was in custody and would be for some time. In due course he would be making an application for bail, Mr Dowling said.

Judge Mary O'Halloran remanded Mr Barrett in continuing custody to April 10th next, "with recommendation from the court" regarding any medical and psychiatric treatment warranted.
