Mrs Kane has been missing since Monday. She left a house in the Clonard area on Monday to return home to Dermott Hill.

Her body was found early today in Cavendish Square where rooms have been let out by a private landlord. Local Sinn Féin MLA Mr Fra McCann said the community was "deeply shocked" at the woman's death.

A spokeswoman for the PSNI said: "Detectives are keen to locate a man who they believe may be able to assist with there inquiries."

"The man has been named as 42-year-old Thomas Graham from west Belfast and is believed to be driving a blue Proton car registration DAZ1960.

"He and the vehicle are believed to have travelled towards the Newry area. Police believe he may be in a distressed state and currently very concerned for his well being and safety," the spokeswoman added.

Police refused to say how Mrs Kane died but it has been reported that she may have been repeatedly stabbed and beaten.

In a separate incident, the body of a man aged between 35 and 40 was discovered by a park ranger 8 a.m. in Gosford Forest Park in Co Armagh. Police are treating the death as suspicious.

Police say they are following a "definite line of inquiry in order to determine the identity of this man." A post mortem is due to take place this afternoon.

It is believed the man sustained a cut to his head. However, this is not thought to be the cause of his death.
