The PSNI were called to a town hall in Co Derry when two Sinn Féin women councillors were confronted by an angry loyalist crowd.
A crowd of around 70 gathered outside Limavady Borough Council last night, while councillors were discussing a Sinn Féin proposal to remove all unionist flags and emblems to create a neutral environment.
A decision was reached in the council chamber to put the matter back for a compromise to be made.
Afterwards Ann Brolly, a former mayor of Limavady, said she was targeted along with party colleague Marian Donaghy as they left the monthly meeting.
"When we left the meeting we were met by a rent-a-mob, they spat at us and their language was obscene," Ms Brolly said.
She said her car was kicked by one man when she got into it. The council chief executive called the police. "I put on a brave face , but I was shaken by it," said Ms Brolly, who will make a statement to police today.
