A small group of protesters gathered this evening outside the Israeli embassy in Dublin to demand the former nuclear technician, Mordechai Vanunu, be released from wide-ranging security restrictions.
Protestors belonging to the campaign group, Peace People, wore placards exhorting passing motorists to beep their horns in support.
The group's spokesman, Mr Justin Morahan claimed there was wide-spread support throughout the Republic for Mr Vanunu to receive full freedom from the Israeli government.
He said: "We are very concerned that Ariel Sharon will return Vanunu to jail. He is being investigated at the moment for breaking the petty restrictions they placed on him after serving an 18-year sentance. So even though he is free, he is not really free at all."
He added the organsiation, which is based in the North, had written to the embassy a number of times but were informed the staff there had no influence on the domestic decisions of the Israeli government.
Mr Vanunu was convicted of treason after he revealed details of Israel's secret nuclear plant to the Sunday Times newspaper in 1986.
Current security restrictions ban Mr Vanunu from giving interviews to foreign media or leaving the country.
