Phnom Penh - An opposition protester was killed and at least one wounded yesterday when military police opened fire to break up a protest near a hotel where a leading opposition politician, Mr Sam Rainsy, was taking refuge, a human rights worker said.
Mr Rainsy, accused of trying to provoke the assassination of the Prime Minister, Mr Hun Sen, was taking refuge in a UN office within the hotel. Cambodian government officials denied the shooting was made on the order of Mr Hun Sen and said the tense capital would pass "a peaceful night".
One official said no arrest warrant was out for Mr Rainsy
