Protestant clergy in Co Monaghan have been given crime prevention advice by gardai after a threat allegedly from the Catholic Reaction Force that it will kill Protestant clergymen in the area if any more Catholics are killed in the North. The threat is contained in a letter which was received by a clergyman in Monaghan town on Wednesday.
Chief Supt Colm Rooney, of the Cavan-Monaghan division, said advice had been given to local ministers, and Garda patrols were taking note of the clergy. The letter would be examined by Garda forensic experts to determine its origins.
The Presbyterian Moderator, Dr Sam Hutchinson, said: "Threats of this type from whatever source, be they against taxi-drivers, community workers, clergy or, indeed, particular sections of the community, are to be condemned utterly. They have no place in our society whatsoever."
