PROFESSOR John Fielding (58), who was first president of the Irish Hospital Consultants Association (IHCA), has resigned his position as Professor of Medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and also as consultant gastroenterologist at Beaumont Hospital, writes Patsy McGarry.
He had been suspended by the college last month following allegations made against a consultant colleague. A subsequent inquiry exonerated the doctor against whom the allegations were made.
Beaumont Hospital management had also requested that the Minister for Health initiate a separate inquiry into the allegations, but this is not now expected to happen.
A native of Cork and graduate of UCC, Professor Fielding is a world expert on Crohn's disease and irritable bowel syndrome. Under his academic contract, all the money he earned from private practice went into the Royal College of Surgeon's research fund.
